Services to Affiliates and Members

CGA-Canada, in collaboration with its affiliated associations, will be its members' primary resource and clearing house for professional services, accounting practices, and standards.

CGA-Canada and the affiliated provincial/territorial associations are CGAs' primary resource for accounting products and services. PD Network and CGA Magazine give members the information and opportunities needed to update competencies and fulfill professional development responsibilities.

PD Network Continues to Grow

The Professional Development Network (PD Network) Web site is a collaborative effort between CGA-Canada and the provincial Affiliates, and has continued to grow since it was first launched in fall 2001. The site, which is managed by the Joint Professional Development Initiative (JPDI), is home to more than 2,500 professional development-related articles.

Over the course of this past year, PD Network was upgraded with a number of resources, including a customized monthly email system, additional professional partnerships, and new product offerings.

CGA-Canada Responds to Exposure Drafts

As a national professional accounting body, CGA-Canada plays an influential role in public policy discussions. The Association regularly speaks out on professional and accounting issues affecting CGAs, students, the profession, and the general public, providing critical feedback on exposure drafts and making recommendations to government, regulatory bodies, and standard setters through relevant submissions.

CGA-Canada responded to exposure drafts from organizations such as the Canadian Public Accountability Board (CPAB), the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB), and the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) on numerous topics, including auditing and financial reporting standards, public accounting, accounting for small and medium-sized enterprises, and the future of accounting standard setting in Canada.

CGA Receives Investigative Body Status

In 2003, CGA Affiliates and public practitioners formally received Investigative Body status under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). CGA public practitioners were granted the authority to provide certain investigative services in accordance with PIPEDA under the investigative body status of their respective provincial or territorial Affiliate. This authority is limited to those circumstances where obtaining consent would compromise an investigation.

CGA Competency Profiles Updated

Using the results of the Association's practice analysis survey, CGA-Canada identified competency profiles for various CGA occupations and emerging trends for professional development.

CGA-Canada will continue to use the results of the practice analysis to ensure new competencies in emerging fields such as globalization, forensic accounting, international taxation, and corporate governance are fully supported by the Program of Professional Studies and related professional development offerings.

The practice analysis survey was a comprehensive analysis of CGAs, recruiters, and employers and supervisors of CGAs. The aim of the study was to validate the Association's requirements for certifying accountants, provide input for CGA program curriculum development, benchmark equivalent post-secondary courses, and confirm the profession's requirements for practical experience. It was completed in July 2003.

CGA Magazine Adds New Features

CGA Magazine is continually improved to increase its usefulness for members and students. This year saw an expanded "News from CGA-Canada" section, with more Association-specific content and the introduction of an event/conference listing section. Also added to the magazine was Association President and CEO Anthony Ariganello's "Reflections" column and profiles of Affiliate Chief Operating Officers throughout the year.

The magazine is CGAs' source for leading-edge information on issues such as Canadian business, technology, and management issues, as well as developments in accounting standards and taxation. Published six times per year, it is one of the best places for Association members and students to learn how CGA-Canada is responding to key issues and read about developments affecting the designation and profession.
