This year, as the Canadian business community applauded changes in the U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley legislation, watched with interest as B.C. and Alberta implemented the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA), debated, again, a common securities regulator, and struggled to respond to changes in the tax structure for income trusts, CGA-Canada grew and prospered, setting in motion plans and tactics to reach the goals set out last year in our five year strategic plan. The six strategic goals set out in the plan are the foundation of all work at CGA-Canada. They are:
- Ensure full professional equity for CGAs
- Be the fastest growing designation
- Be a value provider to the profession and the public
- Protect and enhance our leadership position in the delivery of education, certification and continuing professional development
- Increase our visibility and achieve high brand recognition and value
- Ensure the health of the association2
With the implementation of this plan over the last year, the association is in a strong position to continue to lead change within our profession and to meet the challenges our current environment presents.
This annual report details activities undertaken by the association throughout the 2006-07 fiscal year in each of these areas and clearly demonstrates the important role the association plays in representing CGAs around the world.
The success of the designation to date has been realized through the teamwork of the national, provincial, territorial and offshore CGA associations in branding and marketing the designation and the CGA Program of Professional Studies. As a result of this combined effort, the designation continues to experience steady growth. CGA-Canada now boasts 42,000 members and 26,000 students – a 6.4 per cent increase over the past year. This makes CGA the fastest growing accounting designation in Canada.
We would like to conclude by thanking the CGA volunteers whose efforts are so critical to our success. The evolution and growth of the CGA designation is evidence of the enormous benefits that can be achieved when talented people work together to embrace change and seize new opportunities. We thank you for your ongoing commitment and look forward to working with each of you in the years ahead as we shape the future of the profession together.
