By any measure, this has been an extraordinary year for CGA-Canada. Early on, we were recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, Financial Post’s 100 Best Companies to Work For and one of BC’s Top 40 Employers. These national and provincial competitions recognize employers who lead their industries in offering exceptional workplaces.

It is evident that we have been successful in attracting talented and dedicated staff because we know that they are the most valuable asset that we have. And so it was with great pleasure that we moved our 120-plus Vancouver-area employees into a bright, newly constructed building in June 2008. The south Burnaby area office is modern in design as well as function, featuring a host of technological advancements.

A Century of Professional Excellence

This was also the year CGA-Canada launched its 100th Anniversary celebration to commemorate a century of professional excellence. On our web site and in various print materials, and during a Skills and Learning Summit in Ottawa, we touted the association’s long and successful history of delivering finance and accounting expertise. We paid tribute to our founder, John Leslie, and his Canadian Pacific Railway colleagues, E.B. Manning and F.A. Cousins, who had the vision to establish an accountancy fraternity. And we praised the determination of Ivy Thomas (nee Cox), who in 1932 became the first female CGA. The celebration will conclude at a gala dinner in Montreal in late October. And it is in October that the association adopts its new, two-tiered governance structure. The Board of Directors – with 11 members, including a public representative – fulfills the governance responsibilities, The Affiliation Council, with delegates from each affiliate, is the voice of the designation, sets the association’s strategic plan and approves national policy.

Additionally, we have been working tirelessly with national branding experts and our affiliates to clarify our unique brand identity in the marketplace and to carve out a pre-eminent position for CGA in the years ahead. The association has researched and consulted widely over the last year. The next phase involves developing creative elements to support a distinctive coast-to-coast campaign.

Lastly, as a result of our impressive new mutual recognition agreement with CPA Australia, CGAs now have more career development and networking opportunities than ever before.

As we look back on our remarkable first century – and try to imagine the next – we wish to sincerely thank those who have contributed to our immense achievements: our members, our volunteers, our staff and our countless supporters in business, education, government and the non-profit sector. Together, we will be even more formidable.
