This past year has been a very important one, not only for CGA-Canada and our members, but for the entire world. The financial turmoil that began in mid-2007 deteriorated into a full-scale global financial crisis through 2008 and has been defined by numerous challenges and growing economic pessimism. But regardless of the uncertain economic outlook, CGA-Canada, along with our affiliates, continued to advance and advocate for our members and for the public interest. It is with great resilience and soundness that we continue to grow and prosper. And we have been consistent and sustainable in our performance. CGA-Canada and our members have been proactive during the crisis, offering clients and employers innovative solutions and practical support during these difficult times.
As we have seen, the recession has regrettably affected many Canadians and areas of Canadian business. We are fortunate that by remaining prudent in our financial planning, CGA-Canada has continued to enjoy an extremely solid financial position. As business confidence and growth expectations have been lowered for many businesses, we have not lost sight of the big picture. CGAs continue to build a presence in the profession by looking beyond the global recession and focusing on what matters most, the interests of clients and the broader public interest. Overall, we continue to provide tremendous value and expertise to the business community, proving yet again that accounting isn’t just about the numbers.
During the past year, CGA-Canada’s success has been achieved because of the dedication and tireless efforts of our staff and our CGA volunteers. Despite economic difficulties, we have been very successful in our employee recruitment and retention programs. At the same time, we have been continuously striving to engage and motivate our staff and have worked very hard to raise our brand awareness.
CGA-Canada continues to be involved in major developments at home and abroad. A few key activities took centre stage this year and are highlighted in this report: internal trade initiatives, mutual recognition with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA Ireland), a new national brand campaign, revived professional competencies and much more.
On behalf of CGA-Canada, we would like to sincerely thank those who have contributed to the enormous achievements made over the last year. A heartfelt thanks is extended specifically to our members, our volunteers, our staff and our countless supporters in business, education, government and the non-profit communities. Together, we are advancing our professional concerns and the public interest as well as ensuring that the CGA designation continues to be at the forefront of the accounting profession in Canada.
