Project Management

Project management has become a critical skill for anyone in a senior position these days, yet it's amazing how little training there is in this area. Rookie project managers are often left to their own devices, resulting in cocktail napkin-based planning and projects that go off the rails faster than you can say "budget overrun." If you want to improve your ability to keep your next project on track, take a look at some of these online project management resources.

www.pmboulevard.com

PM Boulevard is probably the most comprehensive source of project management information on the Web. With its extensive knowledge base and regular columns written by experts in the field, this site is a must for the favourites list of anyone who has to manage a project. Guest registration is necessary to access many of the resources, but it is worthwhile. (The site does have a privacy policy.) Paid memberships are also available to those who want access to additional material.

The Project Management Institute has more than 100,000 members and, according to its Web site, is "the leading nonprofit professional association in the area of Project Management." If you are interested in joining the ranks of project management professionals or furthering your formal education in the field, this site is an excellent place to begin. The Montreal branch has a bilingual Web site at www.pmimontreal.org.

www.allpm.com

This site, operated by the International Institute for Learning, Inc., is an excellent free resource for project managers. Its extensive resources include hundreds of links, various articles and a library of downloadable templates, tools and tips.

Hopefully, these resources will benefit you as much as they have me. Who knows, you may even save yourself a trip to the local watering hole to pick up another stack of note paper.
