Fresh Ideas for CGA-New Brunswick
According to John Hunter, FCGA, who became president of CGA-New Brunswick in June 2004, the main goal of CGA-NB for the coming year is a review of the strategic plan with a view to setting new goals and objectives for the next three years. He is also committed to developing a new marketing campaign in association with the other Atlantic affiliates once the current image campaign funded by CGA-Canada is concluded.
"At the chapter level, our goal is to provide support to our mentorship program and to assist our chapters to provide professional development seminars for members," Hunter says, adding that due diligence by the CGA-NB Board of Governors to protect the rights of members in public practice is also high on the agenda.
Hunter was active in the Association for a number of years and presented CGA courses before joining the board of CGA-NB in 2000 as a representative for the Fredericton chapter. The following year he joined the executive.
"My career path has taken many turns over the years, but none of the opportunities given to me would have been available had I not had my designation," says Hunter, who earned his CGA designation in 1975.
For the past 15 years, Hunter has been in public practice in Fredericton, and is affiliated nationally with Porter Hétu International. He is also active in his community, serving as treasurer of both Sport New Brunswick and the New Brunswick Highland Games and Scottish Cultural Festival. John and Reta, his wife of 35 years, live in Lincoln. They have three grown daughters: twins Angela and Carrie, and younger sister Amy.
Serving with Hunter on the CGA-NB executive are Darrell Stewart, FCGA, past president; Len Davis, CGA, first vice-president; Francine Jean, CGA, second vice-president; Troy Mann, CGA, third vice-president; and Patricia Allen, CGA, treasurer.

Beyond Bill 94
The single greatest challenge facing CGA Ontario in the coming year is the implementation of the Daniels report, following the passage of Bill 94 in June 2004, says new president Ron Colucci. The report, commissioned by the Ontario government, is a series of recommendations for reforming public accounting in Ontario.
"Ensuring that CGAs have fair access to licensing and that the newly reconstituted Public Accountants Council sets licensed practice standards is our number one priority," says Colucci, who became president of CGA Ontario in June.
Born and raised in Toronto, Colucci has lived most of his life in Ontario. He has an honours BA in political science from York University and an MBA in finance and accounting from the University of Toronto, and has been self-employed in public practice in Mississauga since 1989.
"In my first job out of university, I lived in Amherst, Nova Scotia for about 18 months, which is where I enrolled in the CGA program," Colucci says. "Even though I had an MBA, to work in the financial accounting field, I felt I needed a professional designation," he adds. He received his certification in Ontario in 1979, and became involved with CGA Ontario when the Peel chapter of CGA Ontario was formed in 1990.
"I was in public practice at that time and it seemed a great way to give something back to the profession as well as to take advantage of networking opportunities," he said.
Colucci was first elected to the board of CGA Ontario in 1992, and, with the exception of one year, has remained there ever since. He got involved at the national level as CGA Ontario's National Education Committee representative, and has been a member of the CGA-Canada board for the past two years. He has also chaired the NEC.
Colucci and his wife of 25 years, Gayle Jessup, have two children — Matthew, 23, and Katherine, 20 — who are both attending post-secondary school.
Serving with Colucci on the CGA Ontario executive are Bruce Hutton, TEP, CFP, FCGA, executive vice-president; Richard Duffield, CD, MBA, P.Log., CFE, FCGA, vice-president; Bonnie Smith, BA, BAdmin., CGA, vice-president; Frederick Burke, B.Comm., FCGA, vice-president; Joyce Evans, CMO, FCIM, MPA, CGA, first vice-president and secretary; Rod Goetz, CGA, second vice-president and treasurer; and Ron Francis, MBA, FCGA, past president.
