Fresh Ideas for New Brunswick
FROM: JUL-AUG 2005 ISSUE
The main goal for CGA-New Brunswick this year is the successful outcome of its Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) challenge with the province of Quebec to allow CGA practitioners access to full practice rights in Quebec, says Leonard D. Davis, CFP, CLU, CH.F.C., CGA, the new president of the Association.
"We also want to explore opportunities to work more closely with our affiliates within the Atlantic region, to see if we can combine our resources and expertise to enhance the services that we provide to our members and the public," he says.
Davis has served on the CGA-New Brunswick board of governors for the past five years, and says he was initially apprehensive when asked to join, but has no regrets.
"Through the support and encouragement of the CGA family, the experience has been both pleasant and fulfilling. It has also given me a greater sense of belonging as well as a deeper appreciation of those who have served before me," he says.
Davis entered the CGA program of professional studies in 1982 after graduating from the business technology program at New Brunswick Community College. Upon receiving his designation in 1988, he went looking for another challenge.
"I decided to break away from traditional accounting roles and enter into the field of financial planning. My accounting designation added instant creditability when trying to convince a potential client to afford me a few moments of their time," he says.
Davis has worked as a financial planner since 1994, and operates his own company, Davis Financial Group Inc. in Saint John, where he was born and raised. He currently resides in Rothesay with his wife Lori and their children.
"With three kids, Lori and I have a full-time job just trying to keep up. I do, however, still have a passion for ice hockey. I am a member of two teams and I play three or four times a week from October to March," says Davis.
"Having my own firm has enabled me to balance family and personal needs and still enjoy financial success," he says, adding that balancing will become even more necessary in October, when he and his wife are expecting another baby.
Serving with Davis on the CGA-New Brunswick executive are Francine Jean, CGA, first vice-president; Troy Mann, CGA, second vice-presient; Pat O'Brien, CGA, third vice-president; Jean-Guy Richard, CGA, treasurer; and John Hunter, FCGA, past president.
