Up to Par in Saskatchewan

CGA Saskatchewan will continue to move forward with its Image Enhancement Campaign into 2006, with the goal of increasing its membership, says Catherine Mengel, CGA, the Association's new president.

Mengel received her designation in 2000 and is currently serving a second three-year term on the CGA Saskatchewan board of governors. For the past three years, she has also represented Saskatchewan on the National Education Committee.

"I got involved because I am very proud of my designation and the opportunities that I have had because of it. I feel it is the best professional accounting designation out there and I am proud to give back and help to grow our association," she says.

Mengel, who also has an Accounting Diploma from Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, has for the past five years run her own public practice firm. She also assists her husband Dan with their insurance brokerage, which they have owned for nine years, and which currently comprises four insurance offices in rural Saskatchewan. Mengel previously worked as a financial analyst at an agricultural chemical company.

Mengel and her husband have been married for 20 years, and live with their 14-year-old son Dallas in Manitou Beach. The entire family are avid golfers, particularly Dallas, who travels around Canada to play in junior tournaments, and in 2004 played in the Callaway Junior World Championships in San Diego.

The family even travelled to Scotland this summer to see Dallas play as part of Team Canada with the Canadian Junior Golf Association. "We're very proud of his accomplishments and I don't miss very many of his tournament rounds each summer," says Mengel.

"I also like to run. I ran my first — and last? — marathon in Regina in 2001, in a time of 4 hours, 14 minutes, and I completed a triathalon in 2002 in Strathmore, Alberta, as a fundraiser for women's shelters," she adds.

Serving with Mengel on the CGA Saskatchewan board are Rob Stephanson, CGA, first vice-president; Don Hillstead, CGA, second vice-president; and Tony Ducie, FCGA, past president.
