Building Bridges

The new president of CGA NWT/Nunavut wants to encourage members to get involved with the Association and help grow the designation in the North.

"Our Association is comparatively young, with a small membership spread over a huge geographic area, making it unique in comparison to other CGA Associations in Canada," says Bernie Bauhaus, CGA. "Member involvement is critical to the Association's growth and development."

Bauhaus also wants to maintain the position of CGA as the accounting designation of choice in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and to foster better working relationships with the other two accounting designations and the Aboriginal Finance Officers Association within the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Bauhaus is currently employed at Avery, Cooper & Co. in Yellowknife, where he performs audits of small non-profit associations and review and compilation engagements for small businesses throughout the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. He has been with the firm for a total of 19 years, with a few detours into other fields, including working as a business advisor for the NWT Development Corporation and controller for TC Enterprises Ltd.

"I believe it's important for members to become involved in their Association beyond just paying annual dues, and that active continued involvement is a responsibility of the members of self-regulating professions," says Bauhaus, who served as CGA NWT/Nunavut Association secretary in 2000-01, treasurer in 2001-02, and vice-president in 2004-05. He also participated in discussions with CGA-Canada regarding the NWT/Nunavut association obtaining a vote at the national board.

Born and raised in Yellowknife, Bauhaus received his CGA designation in November 1995. Bauhaus and his wife Donna Allen have been married for almost 24 years, and the couple have two daughters, both attending university.

His hobbies include coaching high school volleyball, reading, making wine, and traveling. "I have the distinct impression people are surprised when they discover I do have a sense of humour and don't take everything as seriously as they would have expected," he says, adding that he values friendships and maintaining good working relationships with his colleagues, clients, and board members.

Serving with Bauhaus on the CGA NWT/Nunavut executive are Nigel Moorhouse, CGA, vice-president; Karen Cook, CGA, treasurer; Kent Ferguson, FCGA, secretary; and Lee-Anne Tomkins, CGA, past president.
