Opportunity Knocking for Manitoba CGAs
FROM: JAN-FEB 2007 ISSUE
The Certified General Accountants Association of Manitoba is looking forward to a year full of opportunities for CGAs. There is currently an unprecedented shortage of accounting professionals in Manitoba and the demand for CGAs remains at an all time high, according to CGA Manitoba’s new president, Stephen Rosenfield, B.Comm. (Hons.), FCGA. “We need to ensure that new members have the opportunity to take over from baby boomers that are retiring,” he says. Not only is there an abundance of opportunities within Manitoba for CGAs, the draw from other provinces is also significant. In order to ensure that CGA Manitoba continues to thrive, another main focus for 2006-07 is to encourage members to be actively involved in the Association.
After receiving his bachelor of commerce (honours) degree from the University of Manitoba, Rosenfield became a CGA in 1984. He entered the CGA program because, out of all the options available, it was the best suited designation for his career plans. He received his FCGA in 1997.
Rosenfield has volunteered for the provincial and national associations for well over 20 years. Inspired by CGAs who were already serving as volunteers, his first association involvement began when he was a student in the CGA Program of Professional Studies. “I met a number of members who were involved and I knew there was something I could contribute,” he recalls. In 1983 he joined the student council in Manitoba. In 1989, five years after receiving his designation, he joined the CGA Manitoba Board of Directors. Much of his contribution to the Association has been in the area of education. He currently teaches the GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) and GAAS (generally accepted accounting standards) updates courses, and has taught Financial Accounting 1 since 1999. In addition to this, he served on the National Professional Standards Committee (NPC) from 2003 to 2006.
For the past 22 years since his graduation from the CGA Program, Rosenfield has worked in his own accounting practice. Apart from three years working in Australia, he has lived in Manitoba all his life. He has been married to his wife Corky for 24 years and they have a daughter, Lana. When not working or volunteering for the Association, he likes to view the world through a camera lens as he pursues his love of photography. Another of his interests has translated into a rather unique collection — M&M candy and memorabilia.
Serving with Rosenfield on the CGA Manitoba executive are Ray Tetrault, FCGA, first vice-chair; Debbie Mortimer, FCGA, second vice-chair; James Thomas, CGA, treasurer; and Arlene Egnell, FCGA, past president.
