Salaries Rising
Accounting and finance salaries are on the rise, according to figures released in Robert Half International’s
2007 Salary Guide. Accounting managers in small and medium companies had salary growth of three per cent, pushing their earnings to the $56-$81,000 range. Meanwhile, CFOs in companies with $50-$100 million in earnings had the biggest jump with a 3.6 per cent increase over last year, moving them into the $96-$139,000 bracket. Bankruptcies Declining
Bankruptcy rates have been on a steady decline in Canada for the past few years – both for businesses and consumers – according to a report by CIBC World Markets. Alberta has witnessed the largest decline in business bankruptcies, which fell 44 per cent over last year. Nationally, business bankruptcies fell by a cumulative 12 per cent.

Working the Numbers
- Small businesses were the main contributors to job growth in Canada in the second quarter of 2006, providing 48.3 per cent of all new jobs.
- Over the past 10 years, self-employment has increased by 21 per cent in Canada.
- Employees’ income levels are positively correlated to the size of the company where they are employed; small businesses showed average weekly earnings of $650, whereas large businesses paid an average of $785 weekly.

Greatest Canadian Entrepreneurs
A poll by Roynat Canada has named Harrison and Wallace McCain Canada’s greatest entrepreneurs of all time. The founders of the McCain frozen foods empire launched the company in New Brunswick in 1957, producing 1,500 lbs. of french fries and $150,000 in sales in their first year. Today its operations span six continents. Wallace left the company due to a family rift and took over Maple Leaf Foods in the mid-90s. Harrison, known for his savvy business growth strategies, passed away in 2004.
