Editor’s Note
Welcoming the New Board and FCGAs
FROM: NOV-DEC ISSUE | BY PEGGY HOMAN, EDITOR
At CGA-Canada’s Annual General Meeting each fall, our association names a new Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Chair. This year was no exception; however, 2007 marks a turning point in that it is the last year in which the current governance model and selection process will be used.
Recently, I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with our 2007-08 Chair, Ontario’s Ron Colucci, FCGA. He spoke at length about his priorities for the association in coming months, and high on the list is the implementation of a new governance model designed to change the structure and functioning of the Board. Read what Colucci has to say about this and other challenges he’ll be tackling in his role as Chair over the next year.
In the News from CGA-Canada section, we introduce you to a very special group of members: our newest FCGAs. Warm congratulations go out to each of these 29 dedicated individuals on earning this high honour.
This issue’s other feature article discusses the ethics efforts of standard setters around the world, along with proposed revisions to the IFAC Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants. Never has the professional judgment of accountants within an ethical framework been more crucial, and that means additional complexity and added responsibilities for CGAs.
I am pleased to include a guest column on a similar topic – the role of good governance and accountability in preventing corruption – by the Member of Parliament for Edmonton-St.Albert, John Williams, FCGA. Mr. Williams is also the Chair of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC).
In the Profession section, you’ll find tax columns on changes to the Excise Tax Act; new rules on pension splitting, and information on proposed updates to accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.
On behalf of CGA Magazine, CGA-Canada’s Board of Directors, and staff, I wish you and yours the very best of the holiday season.
