What are the most pressing issues faced by CGAs in your region?

The CGA program faces competition from other accounting bodies. However, multiple designations are common among Hong Kong professionals, and the recent mutual recognition agreement (MRA) between CGA-Canada and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has created an opportunity for members of both bodies to attain another designation so as to enhance their job mobility.

Locally, the ACCA and the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA) each have over 20,000 members. In contrast, CGA-Hong Kong is relatively small with 900 local members and students.

You’re leading the way with multiple designations!

I qualified as a CGA in Ontario in 1991 and I believe that the CGA program is very effective in training professional accountants. I am a fellow member of the ACCA, HKICPA, and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales. I also hold a bachelor of arts in accounting and a master’s of science in finance.

What are your goals for the coming year?

CGA-Hong Kong’s goal is to leverage the MRA with ACCA for recognition among employers and regulatory bodies such as the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. We will seek opportunities to promote the CGA program through educational institutions and explore co-operation opportunities with CGA associations in mainland China.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I’ve been on the Hong Kong board for the past seven years and enjoy organizing activities and resolving issues for members and students. I’ve seen CGA greatly increase its presence in the region and become a highly regarded designation in Hong Kong.

What’s your day job?

I’ve been the chief financial officer of E-Mice Solutions (HK) Ltd. since 2005.

How do you relax after a busy day?

For me, going home for dinner with my wife and daughter after a busy day is the best relaxation. I also enjoy reading CGA Magazine during my leisure time.
