CGA-Newfoundland and Labrador president Debra Feltham on business growth

What are your main goals as president?

My biggest goal is to see our members enthusiastic about our association and its goals. One long-term goal is to be front and centre as a career choice for students at Memorial University, the College of the North Atlantic, and in the business community.

What do you tell young people who are exploring accounting careers?

Accounting is a very exciting profession. Newfoundland and Labrador expects substantial business growth over the next few years. Opportunities for accountants are numerous in terms of new job creation and high demand for accounting and public practice services.

Congratulations on receiving your FCGA. What does that mean to you?

It’s one of the highest honours of my career so far. It’s a great personal satisfaction to receive recognition from my peers for my involvement with the association and the business community.

Why did you decide to start your own business?

After working with a couple of firms, I had my own ideas and vision on how a firm should function. I started my practice in May 2005, and in 2007 it became Feltham-Attwood, CGAs with my partner Renee Attwood, CGA. Our firm is already getting recognition for its innovative uses of technology, support for staff, growth, and community commitment. It’s an exciting place to be.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Since my business is young and growing, I see myself staying right where I am. Mentoring future CGAs is extremely important to me, as is my involvement with the CGA-NL Board, and associations within the local business community.

What other interests do you have?

Early in my career, I discovered a love for teaching and mentoring work. I offer training courses and mentorship through various organizations. My family is extremely important to me. My husband and I have three sons that are involved in a lot of activities and I’m passionate about supporting and encouraging them.
