What has been your focus as president for the past five years?
When I first came on board as president in 2002, we set out to create a strategic plan. We completed a member survey, held focus groups, and came up with a complete five-point plan. Last fall we decided to focus on two areas: professional development for members and marketing to prospective students.
What are the main issues and opportunities facing CGAs in the Yukon?
It’s challenging to provide PD opportunities to our members. However, we’ve worked with the CMA and CA orders to organize a two-day IFRS seminar with an invited speaker later this year. The environment is not as competitive up here, and we do a lot of joint activities.
What’s your day job?
I’m the director of administrative services at the City of Whitehorse. We have 275 staff in the whole organization, about 60 of them work in my department.
What do you like most about what you do?
I like knowing that I’m contributing to the development of my city. It’s the biggest municipality here in the Yukon. Last year we hosted the Whitehorse 2007 Jeux du Canada Games; it was the very first time they were held north of 60. I was VP of finance at the time. It’s thrilling to know that my community is developing with my assistance.
Were you born and raised in the Yukon?
My parents were living in the Northwest Territories when I was born. My dad was an RCMP officer there, and we moved to Whitehorse in 1965.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years I’ll be four years away from retirement, so I see myself with a more flexible work schedule, gradually moving back from my work. For the next five years I plan to work with the person who will be my successor and see through one of our current major projects: moving our operations office for the City of Whitehorse to a brand new location.
