Reach for the Top

As tax season shifts into high gear, the challenge of how to balance work, family, and life outside the office may seem even more daunting than usual. And the plethora of technology-based tools designed to improve the flexibility and efficiency of our working lives can assist us only to a point. Executive coaches and business schools continue to emphasize that making the most of each day still comes down to effective time management. Now that’s a subject in which high-performing individuals excel.

But what else does it take to become a top performer? Continuous improvement and effectively managing change are also important. This issue’s Business feature explores some of the characteristics top-performing leaders and companies share, and provides some insight on undertaking a journey of this nature.

In the Career feature we introduce you to Rick Green, CGA, and a senior executive with CHC Helicopter Corporation. Rick was named one of Canada’s all-star executives and the country’s top chief information officer by Canadian Business magazine in its 6th annual look at top performing leaders and companies. The methodology used in the selection process involved screening companies on the S&P/TSX Composite Index for profitable growth; researching the histories of the companies and their senior executives; and a comprehensive review by a panel of experts and magazine staff.

We dedicate this issue to top performing students and CGAs across Canada and around the world.

At press time, U.S.-based private equity firm First Reserve Corp. had made a bid for Vancouver’s CHC Helicopter Corporation that values the global helicopter operator at about $3.7 billion. If the deal is completed as expected, it would be the biggest-ever buyout in the oilfield services industry.

“The European and global leader in oil and gas and search-and-rescue helicopter services, with the world’s largest independent helicopter support business, CHC has a worldwide footprint, the best safety record in the industry, and a dynamic management team executing an exciting growth strategy,” said First Reserve managing director Mark McComiskey.
