What are your goals as president of CGA Saskatchewan?
Our major goal is promoting the designation. We’ve been working hard to enhance our image, and it is working. We want to develop and implement strategies for the future. Our members are our most important asset. We must continue to provide the leadership they expect and deserve.
What is the most critical issue affecting CGAs in your region?
We are facing a complex and changing accounting environment, so ensuring that our members and students have the support, tools, and information necessary for them to remain at the top of their field.
What do you consider to be the greatest accomplishment of your career?
Receiving my designation. I started the program as a mature student with family, business, and financial commitments. I spent the better part of a decade studying. My family and partners sacrificed a lot to enable me to complete the program.
How did your company get started?
My partners and I started an accounting firm in Weyburn in 1994. It grew rapidly, first through reputation, then through acquisitions and amalgamations with other practices. We now have offices employing 35 staff in Weyburn, Regina, and Meadow Lake.
What do you tell people who are considering finance careers?
There is no better time to start a career in business. Right now there is a much greater demand for accounting and finance skills than there is a supply of trained people. Young people in finance will have opportunities not experienced by their predecessors.
How do you unwind?
I like to unwind after work by exercising. In the summer I like to get away to our cottage at the lake and spend as much time as possible outdoors. I like to take my all-terrain quad bike on the trails, and kayak on the lake.
