What are your goals as president of CGA Alberta?
I would like to see our membership numbers grow. To accomplish this, we need to keep promoting the CGA brand to students and prospective employers. I’m very proud to be part of this affiliate, it’s a strong, well-established team, and it’s a pleasure to work with them.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
My current job is academic accounting chair of the business administration diploma at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). I love teaching, and being surrounded by young people, hearing about the issues they face, and what’s important to them.
What do you tell young people who are exploring careers in finance?
Accounting is a great career to pursue. When a young person comes to me for advice about the field of finance, my first reaction is to ask them a lot of questions about their interests, goals, what it is about finance that interests them, and what they hope to achieve, so I can point them in the right direction.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I make it a point to work out at the gym and I enjoy movies and travelling, especially to warm climates. I go to the Caribbean often.
Why did you decide to get involved with community and volunteer work?
I believe that if you experience success then you should share that success. Since 2000 I’ve been a member of the board for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary, an organization whose work I’ve admired for the past 25 years. The same philosophy has led me to volunteer with CGA Alberta: my designation has opened a lot of doors for me, and I want to give something back.
