A Global Perspective

All professions are experiencing a push beyond traditional national boundaries. It’s the new reality of our globalized world. With capital flowing around the world at lightning speed, and international markets expanding exponentially, professional accounting bodies like ours must look beyond our own borders for new policies, trends, and opportunities.

Strong international alliances and partnerships among professional bodies is one way for our profession to grow and prosper. International co-operation and alliances take many forms. At their simplest they may be meetings, conferences, and dialogue sessions to share knowledge, expertise, and policy perspectives.

Further up the ladder, international collaboration can include serving on the governing bodies of international organizations. And at the highest level, there are legal agreements such as memoranda of understanding or mutual recognition agreements.

CGA-Canada has been proud to serve as a founding member of the International Federation of Accountants. Through our work on the IFAC board and committees, we have advocated for sound professional and public policy. CGA-Canada representatives have also served on the boards of other prestigious international accounting bodies, such as the Interamerican Accounting Association. And Canada’s reality as a bilingual nation serves us well in building alliances with accounting professional bodies in the Francophone world.

As part of this international outreach, CGA-Canada was pleased to launch a mutual recognition agreement recently with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. As one of Britain’s prestigious professional accounting bodies and a key global player, ACCA makes a strong partner for CGA-Canada.

In late March, we added another mutual recognition agreement to our roster – this time with the Certified Practising Accountants of Australia. There are many good reasons why such an alliance makes sense for CGA and our members. As the world grows ever smaller and the professions come together for mutual recognition and benefit, this new agreement positions us very well, at home and abroad.

Whatever the future holds, you can be certain that CGA-Canada and its affiliate partners will continue to seek positive new international opportunities for alliances and partnerships, for the benefit of CGA and the profession as a whole.
