CGA Manitoba President Debbie Mortimer on the Importance of Ongoing Growth

What are the most pressing issues faced by CGAs in Manitoba?

Right now we’re working hard to enable Manitoba CGAs to practise public accounting in Ontario. This follows the AIT challenge on labour mobility issues.

What are your goals for this year?

Continued growth is important. CGA is the fastest-growing accounting designation in the province, and as of this year, we are the largest accounting designation in Manitoba. We’re also focussing on student recruitment and an open communication plan with our members.

Is CGA Manitoba involved in any projects with other affiliates?

CGA Manitoba handles all the student administration for CGA Saskatchewan. In addition, we run the shared services facility for smaller affiliates in the Atlantic provinces and the north. This includes taking care of their technology and much of the administration.

Has mentoring played a role in your life?

Grant Christensen, an FCGA colleague, has been a mentor to me. He recruited me into the CGA program and he has been a role model in my volunteer activities with the association. I’m informally mentoring many of my students, as they often come to me with questions about career planning.

What’s your day job?

I’m an instructor at the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba. I’ve been there for 12 years and I teach all levels of financial and managerial accounting. I also conduct seminars on various topics, such as IFRS and the role of critical thinking in accounting.

What has been your most interesting career experience to date?

Right now I’m writing a textbook and that’s been very enjoyable. It’s a Canadian adaptation of a U.S. intermediate level accounting textbook and it will be finished next year.

What are you favourite leisure activities?

I like going to the beach when the weather’s good. I enjoy boating, tubing, and most water sports.
