CGA Nova Scotia President Roger Boutilier on the Versatility of CGAs

What are your goals for the coming year for your association?

This year we plan to build a strong, cohesive board of directors that will inspire CGAs to volunteer to serve their association. We will also be building greater pride in the CGA association and laying the foundation for a two to three year strategic plan, rather than planning for just one year at a time.

What are the most pressing issues faced by CGAs in your region?

We need to enhance the CGA image and recruit students to enroll in the program by letting people know that the CGA designation brings great opportunities and great respect; CGAs are sought out for their opinions and expertise. It’s a recession-proof career because good or bad, organizations always need professional financial leaders.

What’s your day job?

I’m the director of finance and administration for the Nova Scotia Association of Realtors. I’ve worked here for four years. Prior to that I had always worked in for-profit organizations. For me the biggest difference between the two is the stakeholders. In the for-profit sector the stakeholders are the shareholders/ownership and the focus is primarily on the bottom line, whereas in the not-for-profit sector the stakeholders are who the organization is advocating for and the focus is on providing membership value.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I would like to be the executive director of an association or the CEO of a small or medium-sized enterprise.

Do you have any other designations or degrees in addition to your CGA?

This year I received my MBA from Laurentian University through the CGA-LU degree partnership.

What leisure activities do you pursue in your spare time?

My favourite leisure activities are golf and fishing. I also enjoy camping. My family and I take two to three camping trips a year; it’s nice to get away from it all.
