CGA NL president Trevor McCormick on choosing CGA

What are the most pressing issues faced by CGAs in your region?

On November 1 there was a new CGA Act that will require revisions to our internal policies, by-laws, governance structure, and disciplinary processes. The public accountants licensing board which regulates auditing in the province is revising its Act as well, so we will be addressing the changes to that Act.

What are your Association goals for the coming year?

We’ll be shepherding through the new legislative changes, and focussing on student recruitment and increasing our profile.

What inspired you to become a CGA?

When I was in the co-op business program at MUN (Memorial University), I chose accounting as my concentration. I completed work terms at the auditor general’s office and worked with CGAs, CAs, and CMAs. After working with people from each designation I decided CGA was the best fit for where I wanted my career to go.

What’s your day job?

I’m an audit senior at the Office of the Auditor General of Newfoundland and Labrador. I’ve worked there for 11 years.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I get to see the big picture of how the government interacts with citizens and plays a huge part in their lives.

Have you lived in Newfoundland all your life?

Yes. Growing up my father was an RCMP officer and every few years we would move to a new community, so I’ve lived all over the province.

How do you unwind after a busy day?

After a busy day I like to spend time with my wife and two small children. My children have a tremendously active social life, so I’m going to a lot of birthday parties and other kids’ events with them. For hobbies, in winter I like to play hockey, and in the summer I like boating, swimming, just about any water sport.
