JOB SUMMARY (MISSION)

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Senior Communications Advisor (Ottawa) is responsible for providing communications expertise and support to a variety of clients within CGA-Canada with a primary focus on Ottawa-based activities – including both Research and Standards and Government Relations. The incumbent will participate in strategic communications and media relations planning and both lead and assist in implementing strategies, activities and tactics as necessary to achieve organizational goals.

A key focus of activity for the Ottawa CGA-Canada operations is government relations, regulatory issues, research, and public and professional policy development. In addition, the senior communications advisor will support the needs of the International, Education and Corporate departments as necessary.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTING OUTCOMES:

  1. To perform the functions of a public affairs project team leader
  2. To assess stakeholder and client needs, develop a project plan and deliver relevant and audience appropriate materials in a timely fashion
  3. To work collaboratively with internal or external stakeholders to determine the best strategy and tactics for a project or communications task
  4. To ensure all projects stakeholders are given regular project updates as the project unfolds
  5. To maintain an up-to-date project file on each project including a project plan defining scope, client requirements, deliverables, deadlines, approval processes, turnaround times, project team contact information, estimates, quotes, budget and relevant emails and supporting documentation
  6. To identify potential issues and implement a solution in a timely fashion
  7. To raise unresolved issues to the Communications Director in a timely fashion
  8. To advise the Communications Director of any deadline that may not be met well in advance
  9. To understand association priorities and key messages and use both in practice
  10. To stay informed on association business and key areas of interest

Communications work:

  • Media relations
  • Communication project planning, management and execution – both as a team member and as a team leader
  • Developing key messages for communications purposes
  • Researching and writing communications materials – articles, media releases, backgrounders, brochures, speeches etc.
  • Participate in the production of national events
  • Other communications duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge & Experience
  • Completion of post secondary degree in communications, journalism or related field or combination of education and relevant experience
  • Candidates should have 7 - 10 years of progressively senior experience preferably in a corporate, not-for-profit, or association setting.
  • Considerable knowledge of corporate communications, principles and practices
  • Considerable experience in writing, editing and web communications
  • Considerable experience in media relations
  • Considerable project management experience in a multi-stakeholder environment
Skills and Abilities
  • Superb personal communication skills, both orally and in writing, are required as are strong people skills and a highly developed sense of organizational sophistication.
  • Ability to function effectively in a team environment, and be equally comfortable in the role of team leader or team member
  • A self-motivated, self-starter

  • An ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time
  • The ability to assess and handle sensitive and complex situations and issues with diplomacy, tact and skill

  • The ability to work comfortably and effectively on projects with multiple interests and multiple stakeholders
  • Capable of taking part in decision-making and project management.
  • Demonstrated ability with graphic design and print production leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflicting deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to establish priorities, plan and organize work to meet objectives, goals and deadlines
  • Fluently bilingual in – English and French (written and oral)
