CGA Certification Program for Indian ICAI Members

Becoming a member of CGA-Canada

CGA-Canada is offering a unique opportunity for members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) to complete the requirements to become a Certified General Accountant while still residing in India. Qualified ICAI members must meet the CGA professional experience requirements while taking several CGA on-line courses and exams, including CGA’s final Professional Applications and Competency Evaluations (PACE). It is anticipated that this pilot program can be completed in as few as 12-15 months.

Benefits

India is among the top three source countries for new immigrants to Canada. The Certified General Accountants Association is committed to assisting internationally educated professionals, particularly when their objective is an accounting based financial management career in Canada. By achieving full CGA membership prior to arrival, they reduce uncertainties associated with not having a Canadian accounting designation when competing for professional positions. This competitive advantage helps avoid the career setbacks those with only foreign professional qualifications often experience upon arrival in Canada, and may well facilitate career growth earlier in one’s Canadian experience.

Minimum CGA Certification Requirements for India ICAI Members:

  • 3 years of professional level experience completed, including at least two years of documented/verifiable accounting experience.
  • CGA-Canada’s Canadian Personal and Corporate Taxation (TX1) course and exam.
  • Two CGA-Canada Certification (PACE) Level electives or graduate (masters) level equivalents courses and exams. CGA-Canada is currently offering Advanced Corporate Finance (FN2) and Advanced External Auditing (AU2) to candidates in India.
  • CGA-Canada’s two Professional Applications and Competency Evaluation (PACE) capstone requirements:
    • Issues in Professional Practice (PA1) course and exam
    • Strategic Financial Management (PA2) course and exam

Eligibility

As this is a pilot project, only a maximum of 35 applicants will be selected at this time. Preference will be given to ICAI Associate and Fellow members in good standing who have been practising for at least three years, and who graduated with the B.Comm/BBA degree or higher and passed the CA. Final Examination Both Groups. Other India ICAI members will be assessed on an individual basis, but may face additional requirements. Moreover, practising professionals with verifiable external auditing experience are preferred.

Schedule

The pilot project begins in January, 2012. Application deadline will be in April for first course that begins in May. For the examination timetable and important dates, please see the Related Information column on the right.

Fees

The Application & Assessment fee is $150 Canadian dollars and is non-refundable (unsuccessful applicants will be fully refunded). Those accepted who later decide not to pursue the program will not receive a refund for the application. All submitted documents will remain the property of CGA-Canada. Course fees are generally inclusive of texts, specialized software and the initial examination. A separate pro-rated tuition fee is also charged. For fee details, please see the Related Information column on the right.
