Canada’s Certified General Accountants applaud the report of the Competition Policy Review Panel as an instructive framework for a more competitive Canadian economy.
CGA-Canada made a submission to the panel and is pleased to see many of its recommendations reflected in the panel’s final report, particularly the need to balance regulation with competition, and the need to improve internal trade.
“CGA-Canada welcomes the work of the expert panel and will continue to work with government in implementing these recommendations,” said Anthony Ariganello, CPA (DE), FCGA, President and CEO of CGA-Canada. “We need to ensure that standards and regulations are appropriate, effective and efficient and do not hinder or impair the free flow of services within Canada and with our trading partners. We also need to guard against new barriers to competition or entry to professions for qualified individuals.”
The report calls on the federal government to show leadership on issues such as internal trade and securities regulation. It also urged all levels of government to work cooperatively in the national interest. As well, the panel noted the work of a CGA-Canada led coalition of business, industry and professional associations on the internal trade issue.
“This report is yet further validation that Canada’s Agreement on Internal Trade requires improvements if we are to achieve a free and open market across the federation,” said Ariganello. “We welcome the timelines proposed for eliminating barriers to the free flow of goods, services and people.”
He also noted that the panel’s recommendations to reduce personal and corporate income taxes, harmonize provincial sales taxes with the federal GST, and streamline regulations are in line with long-standing CGA-Canada positions.
