(Vancouver, June 23, 2010) —

CGA-Canada congratulates the Certified General Accountants of Ontario for receiving the authority to license Certified General Accountants (CGAs) to practise public accounting in the province. This is a positive and welcome development for the public, the business community and the accounting profession itself, says Terry LeBlanc, Chair of CGA-Canada.

“CGA-Canada congratulates our colleagues at CGA Ontario for this much-anticipated development,” says LeBlanc. “The association has worked hard to bring reforms to the regulation of public accounting that are in the public interest.”

Public accounting involves the provision of independent audits or review services of an entity’s financial statements and other financial information to ensure they are fair and reasonable so that a third party will be able to rely on them.

“This decision means that businesses and consumers in Ontario will now benefit from the same competitive marketplace and high standards for public accounting that are in place throughout the rest of the country,” says Anthony Ariganello, President and CEO of CGA-Canada. “True competition leads to better accountants, better professional services, and higher standards of regulation.”

The Certified General Accountants of Ontario and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario are the only two accounting bodies in the province authorized to license their members to practise public accounting.
